Once upon a time, I bought a house.

Marta, Greta, and Pork Chop

July 21st, 2010 at 18:44

I named the chickens.

The one with yellow legs and the pretty feathers is Marta and the grey one is Greta.  I’m holding on to the right to change their names at any time, but I’m going to see how these go.

When I went out to bother them this afternoon, they were having an afternoon nap.  Marta wanted no part of my bothering them, but Greta was not about to move just because I came by to make some noise.

They seem to like each other, which is nice.  I was worried that somebody might get pecked to bits.  Instead, they like to always do the same thing.

We are chickens and we are standing here.

Simultaneous fluffing

Chicken naptime!

They are still babies with baby-feathers.  Marta doesn’t have any real tail feathers yet, just fluff and fluff-pants:

Greta is still much bolder (and always looking to make an escape).  Here she is standing tall to listen (and showing off her feather pants):

Eventually they got tired of me and went back to napping.  Please note that Marta’s eye is actually closed here.  OMG.  Sleeping chickens.

I’m super tired today.  I woke up at 6:30 because I was very excited about the chickens, and sort of worried about leaving them locked inside their Eglu too long this morning, fearing that they’d peck each others eyes out if they were in there too long after daylight.  Instead, when I went to let them out, they were snuggled up together in the nest box.  SO CUTE!

Oh!  I forgot about Pork Chop.

The previous owners of this house had homing pigeons in the big nasty coop:

Two of the pigeons never left.  You can see one of them in this photo.  I was shaking my fist at them a lot until I read the pigeon chapter in this book:

Pet pigeons are actually pretty interesting.  Anywho, these days only one of the pigeons is around.  When my mom was here over the weekend, she filled the birdfeeder, and I think now the pigeon is officially my pet.

He LOVES the chickens.  He practically walked right up to me yesterday to check them out.  As soon as I decided I was going to name him, I knew his name had to be Pork Chop.  I really don’t know why.  Here he is:

I don’t know what he’s doing here, but he stood just like that for literally five solid minutes.  At least.

So those are the birds.  Marta and Greta the chickens, and Pork Chop the pigeon.

Pretty sure you are leading the most interesting life of anyone I know right now.

I think it’s cool that you are adopting the pigeon. I’m not sure I could get over my distaste, given my many years with the incredibly disgusting city pigeons.

When will the chickens start laying eggs?

P.S. Can the chickens fetch things for you while your appendix hole heals up?

Dude, what I really need them to do is mow the lawn! They’re little, but I bet if they worked together they could make it happen.
