Living the Dream
Today I got two chickens.
The Eglu arrived while I was still in the hospital (more on the appendix later). This weekend, my mom put it together for me, since I was still relatively immobile and am still not allowed to lift anything.
Last Monday (the day I ended up in the ER), I had browsed the chicken selection at Western Farm Center, and today I went back to pick out my pullets.
Originally, I wanted to get an “Easter Egger” or “Araucana” chicken because they lay green and blue eggs. Apparently though, those babies are in high demand. The man at Western Farm Center told me today that you have to get to the store within hours of a shipment, or they are gone. There are also none to be found on craigslist.
Anywho, I went with a Golden Laced Wyandotte because she is super pretty, and a breed I hadn’t heard of before, the Cuckoo Maran. I googled it on my phone while at the store, and discovered that they lay dark “chocolate colored” eggs. Um, yes please! According to my brief google, they’re also kind of rare so that is fun.
Here they are, being chickeney:
This is the Golden Laced Wyandotte. She made herself the boss of the other chicken within about two seconds. Isn’t she pretty?
This is the Cuckoo Maran. Even though the other chicken bosses her, she is much more bold with me. She escaped when I first put her in, and there were some moments of chasing the chicken around the backyard. She is very interested in getting out, and has let me pick her up a couple of times. She’s also noisier than the golden chicken. I’m curious to see if their traits hold out.
These are chicken feet. Chicken feet are crazy.
Here’s the view from the back of the Eglu:
These chickens are still kind of babies- they don’t have all of their grown-up feathers yet, and they won’t be laying eggs for several weeks. The golden one is still pure fluff in the tail and leg department:
They still need names. I’m thinking something with proper, old-lady connotations.
In the meantime, it is about to get dark, so I need to go hustle them into the main part of their Eglu and lock them up for the night. Apparently, after tonight, they’ll know what to do, but I’m slightly afraid I’m going to have to crawl inside the run to make them move tonight. Fingers crossed that they are smart enough to go inside on their own.

that is so awesome, i am full of jealousness!!!! i can’t wait to meet them. and dress them, GOL!
