Because I like to watch the progress, here is what my yard looks like now: And two years ago: Also for comparison–then (last year) and now:

The Yard: April
April 12, 2012The Birds and the Bees and the Flowers and the Trees
April 12, 2012My seuss-kale has exploded into flowery amazing: And the bees are all over it. Literally. Also attracting lots of bees are the borage and sunflower plants: And for good measure, here is a chickenbutt: And my always lovely persimmon tree:
Pond. Sort of.
April 11, 2012I saw an idea for a backyard pond made from a livestock water trough on Pinterest (Thanks, Camille, for showing me how to use Pinterest!): Source: penick.net via Kara on Pinterest …and I had to make it. First step was to go to the hardware store that sells everything, including these. Unfortunately, the [...]
One More Thing
April 10, 2012I just found a photo on my phone from the greenhouse reorganization day…. I moved a pot, and underneath was THIS: I was not expecting to see a big, squishy thing hanging out in the greenhouse, and I totally froke out and ran. Eventually, he disappeared, and I did not investigate. Bleah.
Greenhouse
April 10, 2012My little greenhouse is FULL UP. The weather is warming up (even though it is raining again today. Boo.), so I was able to haul out a lot of the potted plants that had spent the winter inside. For now, the citrus and potato buckets are still inside. I also moved all of the tomatoes [...]
Fermentation Station!
March 22, 2012Also over the weekend, I finally started on my fermenting experiments! First, the kombucha. I am growing a SCOBY, which is a big, nasty, rubbery yeasty culture that will then brew up the kombucha, which is a fermented tea. (You can give it a google for more info, I’m too lazy to track down links). [...]
Greenhouse, Garden Plans
March 18, 2012Man, I love my little greenhouse. It is jam packed with seedlings in there. I was out there this morning, thinking about doing some transplanting, but it was too cold. I transplanted just a few things that were completely bursting out of their containers, and am going to make a second attempt at it this [...]
SeussKale
March 15, 2012My kale is about done. I’m letting it flower, and hoping I might be able to save a few seeds. That makes it even more Dr. Seuss looking than it has been, which is saying a lot. I can’t really explain that. I also can’t explain the celery behind the kale. It grows horizontally instead [...]
Sunflowers
March 13, 2012These crazy sunflowers actually bloomed! In March! November-ish, they all just started growing from seeds that fell from the old sunflowers, and I was sure that that would die, so I left them alone. But they did not die. They grew throughout the occasionally freezing temperatures of winter, and then bloomed. At the Beekeeper Symposium, [...]
Branch
March 12, 2012Isn’t this fancy? My neighbors on either side of me have giant, old oak trees, and frankly, the best stuff falls out of them. I get chunks of moss, acorns, leaves, and lately, I’ve been getting a lot of lichen-ey branches dropping into my yard.
